Principally reporting to the Nashville Product Engineering Manager, the Agency Engineer/ Lab Supervisor works locally and cross-functionally to manage the day-to-day testing, product evaluation, and regulatory agency compliance activities for water heating and cooling related products manufactured in Nashville and at global partners as required.   This is a hands-on role supervising a Team of Laboratory Technicians and support staff with the overall responsibility for building and evaluating prototypes and providing testing services to determine conformity with internal, industry, and regulatory agency safety and performance standards.  This role ensures that the highest level of design quality, integrity and performance are maintained with strict adherence to Hayward Industries and all applicable regulatory agency programs, policies, and procedures.     

Responsibilities

  • Manage and participate in all agency related activities that support products manufactured in Nashville and at global partners.
  • Supervise a Team of Laboratory Technicians and Support Staff that provides R&D resources including testing and evaluation services to determine product conformity with internal and industry performance, safety, and regulatory agency standards and conformance with Product Reliability Goals & Expectations
  • Collaborate directly with Product Development Teams and Leadership to establish goals, expectations, and work priorities for all Lab resources to meet established project timelines.
  • Develop and maintain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of all regulatory agency, product safety, and performance standards applicable to Hayward Industries Heating products.
  • Manage the day-to-day Agency certification activities for assigned projects. Guide Product Development Teams through all phases of design and the Agency certification process.
  • Interface with 3rd Party Certification Bodies to obtain appropriate product certifications and maintain established project timelines.
  • Represent Hayward on Codes and Standards development committees (ANSI, UL, NSF, DOE). Interpret standards, rules, and regulations, etc. as they apply to Hayward’s products and challenge decisions when appropriate. 
  • Participate in the development of Annual Budgets and Capital Projects for the Lab.
  • Pursue and maintain 3rd party certifications and accreditations for laboratory facilities. Including all documentation and calibration requirements supporting ISO 17025 lab accreditations.
  • Assure appropriate PPE, equipment, chemicals, etc. are maintained for efficient operation.
  • Implement appropriate preventative maintenance and calibration schedules and procedures for all test equipment.
  • Assure all documentation and data collection associated with the lab is complete, accurate and correct.
  • Manage local field trial sites and
  • Promote and maintain a clean, safe, and professional working environment in accordance with OSHA and Hayward Safety policies.

Qualifications

  • Proven record as a Technical Team Leader and Individual Contributor in a Product Development environment.
    • 5+ years’ experience in HVAC and pressure vessel design utilizing plastics. 
    • 2+ years’ supervisory experience preferably in a product-development and/or test lab environment required.
  • Strong Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing aptitude.
  • Working knowledge of quality principles, manufacturing processes, and design methods.
  • Functionally referencing UL, CSA, ANSI, NFPA, NSF Standards, DOE Regulations and CEC Title 20 & 24
    • (ex. NFPA70, NFPA54/ANSI Z223.1, UL60335, ANSI Z21.56, CSA B22.2, NSF 50 / 61, 10 CFR Parts 429 and 430, 16 CFR 305)
  • Clearly Speak, Read, and Write using the English language. Foreign language skills a plus.
  • Team player with strong Interpersonal, Communication, Analytical, and Problem-Solving skills.
  • Computer literacy using Microsoft Office products including presentation and program management software.
  • Ability to maintain company sensitive information in confidence, unquestionable integrity.
  • Ability to work independently and manage lab technicians.

 

Education and Experience:   

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials or related Sciences required.
  • Experience managing an ISO 17025 Certified Laboratory and knowledge of OSHA regulations.
  • Experience with guiding teams through the product certification process and securing 3rd party certifications for heating / cooling or related equipment.
  • Previous leadership experience in a technical environment.

 

Physical Requirements: 

  • The position involves sitting, standing, and walking in both an Office and Laboratory environment.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 45 lbs. and frequent walking within and between departments is required.

 

Work Environment: 

  • Involves both Office and Laboratory work. Indoor & Outdoor activities are routine requirements of the job.
  • Frequently works around water, gas appliances, mechanical assemblies, and electrical machinery. The environment can be noisy at times.
  • Travel to other Hayward facilities, field installations, suppliers, and codes and standards related activities as required.
