The Electro-Mechanical Engineer – Automation plays a key role in designing, developing, and implementing automated production equipment to enhance our internal manufacturing processes. This hands-on position requires expertise in robotics, PLCs, HMIs, and control systems to improve efficiency, quality, and scalability in manufacturing.

 

The ideal candidate is a problem solver with strong analytical skills and the ability to collaborate across teams, including product management, manufacturing, design engineering, and external partners.

 

Responsibilities

Automation & Equipment Development

  • Design and develop new automated production equipment, integrating robotics, HMIs, PLCs, and application controls.
  • Develop mechanical and electrical upgrades for production equipment using in-house and external design resources.
  • Plan and implement equipment improvements to enhance production efficiency, cost reduction, and operational safety.
  • Provide technical design support in debugging and optimizing automation equipment.
  • Oversee machine capabilities to ensure compliance with Hayward’s lean manufacturing principles.

Collaboration & Cross-Functional Support

  • Work closely with product management, design engineering, manufacturing, and external design partners to develop and optimize equipment.
  • Provide design oversight and consultation for multiple development and support activities.
  • Ensure manufacturing equipment is maintained to support safe and consistent product quality.

Data Acquisition & Process Optimization

  • Develop protocols for data acquisition from machine controllers.
  • Integrate vision systems, wireless communications, and networking solutions into automation processes.
  • Utilize PLC ladder logic, analog signals, and HMI panel programming for optimized control.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in electro-mechanical equipment and controls technologies.
  • Experience in PLC ladder logic, HMI programming, data acquisition, and vision system integration.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks (preferred) and AutoCAD Mechanical.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for programming and troubleshooting machine controls.
  • Proven ability to manage machine design projects from concept to deployment.
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing principles is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to interact across all levels of the organization and with external vendors.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment while driving innovation and efficiency.
