Overview

The HVAC Lab Technician will be a member of the Product Engineering Team and support the production and quality teams through as needed and through the completion of projects.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Functions

  • Applies knowledge of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to efficiently translate testing needs into executable unit setup, product testing and product performance analysis.
  • Builds or modifies prototypes from the ground up or existing units as required.
  • Instruments test setups, equipment, and samples with instrumentation and date acquisition.
  • Diagnoses electrical and mechanical faults.
  • Applies reasoning skills to evaluate effectiveness and validity of test results.
  • Collect, analyze and summarize test data in reports for publication to engineering staff.
  • Contributes to the engineering team by participating in daily laboratory activities, observing test methodologies, and applying knowledge and experience to recommend improvements to the efficiency and effectiveness of existing Hayward products and laboratory testing processes.
  • Ensures the integrity of laboratory facilities and equipment is maintained at all times.
  • Maintains company sensitive information in confidence.
  • Review and interpret product standards and test procedures pertinent to products under test.
  • Conscientious of all plant safety protocols.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Self-motivated, organized, and able to work independently with a minimum of supervision and unquestionable ethics.
  • Competent and comfortable with intermediate mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic principles.
  • Strong aptitude and experience with the testing and troubleshooting of mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Team player with strong interpersonal, communication, analytical, and reasoning skills.
  • Ability to interpret test results and troubleshoot test setups.
  • Proven problem solving, analytical, and logical reasoning skills.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office programs.
  • Proficient in the use of basic measurement, instrumentation equipment and data acquisition systems.
  • Clearly speak, read, and write using the English language.
  • Competent ability to communicate observations and present test methodology and results to other lab personnel, engineers and senior staff as required.
  • Competent with wiring voltages and currents up to 250 VAC and 60 AMPs respectively.
  • Comfortable around open flames.
  • Competent with the piping and flow measurement of flammable gases such as natural, propane, butane and A2L refrigerants.
  • Competent with sheet metal and plastic fabrication.
  • Competent with brazing, reclaiming, charging, and leak testing refrigeration systems.
  • Recommend passing and maintain Hayward forklift certification.
  • Recommend EPA Sections 608 Type II certified.
  • Recommend ANSI Z21 and ASME Section 4 certification procedures.
  • Recommend knowledge of test agencies ETL, CSA, UL and how they relate to product approvals.
  • Working knowledge of gas rate calculations, pressure drop calculations, and heat transfer modes.
  • Working knowledge of Refrigeration cycle theory, OHMs law and COP calculations.

 

Education and Experience

  • Minimum 2 years independent work experience in the Maintenance, HVAC or Refrigeration fields.
  • Applicants with a formal education in Maintenance, HVAC or Refrigeration studies who can successfully demonstrate the required qualifications will also be considered.

 

Physical Requirements

  • The position involves sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Occasional lifting of products under test up to 50 lbs.

 

Work Environment

  • The environment is that of a laboratory setting, both indoors and outdoors, in all seasons and weather conditions.
  • Frequently works around water, flammable gases, mechanical assemblies, machinery, and electricity. The environment is occasionally noisy.
  • Limited travel to other Hayward facilities and job sites as required.
