    Position Overview:

    Plans, coordinates, leads and directs quality assurance personnel in the implementation and compliance with effective inspection and audit procedures to ensure the continuous production of products consistent with established engineering standards.  Administers failure analysis and evaluation for customer returns, analyzes data and compiles reports for management.  Manages the receiving inspection functions to ensure that purchased goods meet the engineering specifications and quality requirements.

    Responsibilities

    Major Tasks and Responsibilities:

    • Supervises and trains staff of quality inspectors and determines workload priorities to ensure continuous improvement of product, processes and documentation. Directs and trains workers engaged in inspection and testing activities to ensure compliance with existing quality control procedures and policies.
    • Develops and suggest new procedures and processes for continuous improvement.
    • Ensures that finished goods Bills of Material agree with the actual configuration of components used to build products through audits using current documents. Discrepancies found are reported to manufacturing and design engineering as deemed appropriate.
    • Plans and directs, through supervisory staff, the activities of inspection and auditors to ensure that products and components meet engineering and quality requirements.
    • Compiles monthly Quality Assurance Report for plant manager and production department managers.
    • Ensures that all internally produced parts, purchased parts and finished products conform to engineering prints and performance specifications. Responsible for rejecting and quarantining all parts and products that are found to be suspect, or that do not meet specifications.
    • Ensures that rejected parts are properly dispositioned per existing procedures.
    • Ensures that first piece approval is obtained from corporate engineering on all new products.
    • Ensures that the appropriate changes are made when an ECN is received and that first piece approval is obtained from corporate engineering according to agreed upon dates.
    • Develops gauging or inspection methods and other process control procedures to ensure that high quality products are being produced.
    • Determines disposition on goods and gives disposition to production planners so that rework may be scheduled if needed.
    • Ensures that all purchased parts from outside vendors are inspected in accordance with QI plans and meet or exceed quality and performance standards in a timely manner. When rejects occur, contacts vendors and the purchasing department so that proper credit may be obtained for the rejected shipment.
    • Communicates with corporate engineering and quality assurance on significant product variances as required.
    • Communicates daily with the on-site production managers and first line supervisors when quality problems arise.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • Act as liaison for regulatory auditor's scheduled compliance audits

     

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

    Directly supervises all hourly and exempt employees in the Quality Assurance Department.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, prioritizing workload and  assigning and directing workforce accordingly; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

    Qualifications

    Education and Experience:

    Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university and four plus years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  ASQC desired. 

     

    Other Skills and Abilities:

    Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.  Must have demonstrated strong leadership skills.  Ability to motivate, decide priorities and lead a group of plant inspectors in the successful production of high quality products.  Ability to operate calculator, PC, and printer.  Ability to use measurement tools for inspection purposes such as calipers, micrometers, durometers and optical comparators.  Knowledge of Statistical Process Control, Statistical Quality Control, Total Quality Management, ISO9000, Metrology, and plastics.  Ability to read blueprints.  Knowledge of plastic molding processes including injection, blow, and extrusion as required by plant location.  Knowledge of sheet metal stamping, forming, and fastening as required by plant location.
